The presidential inauguration is an event that's about as close to a royal coronation as American government gets. It's a day filled with ceremony,
guards, salutes, parades, speeches, a party that's actually still called a "ball" and, of course, symbolism: of new beginnings, rites of passage,
of change. It's the president's opportunity to declare his administration's intent: At John F. Kennedy's inauguration in 1961, he made his
legendary "Ask not what not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country" speech.

Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, a key Obama supporter and rumored Secretary of Energy candidate, lobbied on behalf of the green energy industry the morning after
the election. Responding to a question from a CNBC interviewer about the merits of "undivided government," Rendell said, "[Undivided government]
is going to allow us to act quickly. We need… to send a message to the renewable energy economy, to the [20 to 25] companies in Pennsylvania and… in New Jersey
who are hanging in the balance and, if that tax credit is not renewed or made permanent, they're done in the next three to four months. This government is

The following is a statement read by President-elect Barack Obama before his first press conference since Election Day.

This morning, we woke to more sobering news about the state of our economy. The 240,000 jobs lost in October marks the 10th consecutive month that our economy
has shed jobs. In total, we've lost nearly 1.2 million jobs this year, and more than 10 million Americans are now unemployed. Tens of millions of families
are struggling to figure out how to pay the bills and stay in their homes. Their stories are an urgent reminder that we are facing the greatest economic
challenge of our lifetime, and we must act swiftly to resolve them.

November 5, 2008--Civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr.'s sister, Christine King Farris, celebrates U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama's
win Tuesday night at a Baptist church in Atlanta, Georgia. History was made when Obama, 47, became the United States' first African-American President.
Obama took 52 percent of the popular vote, while his Republican opponent, John McCain, earned 46 percent. The election saw the highest American voter turnout
in 40 years, with nearly 120 million people casting ballots, experts estimated. Around the globe people took to the streets to revel in Obama's win,
considered by many an inspiration for minorities and a sign that the U.S. plans to change direction, the Washington Post reported. -Photograph by John

has been a strong, effective voice for Chicago in Congress.

At the beginning of his second term, Emanuel received an assignment to serve on the House Ways and Means Committee, which oversees taxes, trade, Social
Security, and Medicare issues. Additionally, Emanuel was appointed by then House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi to serve as Chairman of the Democratic
Congressional Campaign Committee. Under his leadership, the DCCC expanded the Democratic Party's reach in every region of the country. Democrats gained 30
seats in the House and ushered in a new Democratic majority in the House of Representatives.
